Floyd Rose and Floating Tremolo Setup in Manhattan
A floating bridge is a balancing act between string tension and spring tension, and every string change upsets it. If your Floyd sits tilted, won't return to pitch, or dives when you bend one string, it needs someone who sets them up every week. That's us.
What's in an advanced setup
The Advanced Setup ($200) covers any locking or floating system: Floyd Rose, Ibanez Edge and Lo-Pro, Kahler, two-point floating Strat bridges, Bigsby, plus locking nuts and 12-strings. We balance the bridge parallel to the body, set the claw, adjust action and intonation with the fine tuners zeroed, cut and check the locking nut, and set relief. Then we tune, dive, pull up and tune again until it comes back every time.
Make a Strat float, or stop it
Want a two-point Strat trem to float properly? The floating trem conversion ($50 labor plus a $10 shim) shims the neck so the bridge can sit up off the body with correct action. Want the opposite, a trem that stays put? Tremolo stabilization ($90 to $160) covers blocking, Tremol-No style stabilizers and spring upgrades.
Restrings on locking systems
A restring on a Floyd or 12-string is $115 because the bridge has to be re-balanced every time. If you change gauges, it's an advanced setup, not a restring, since the spring tension and nut need to move with the strings.

Bring the trem arm and the locking nut's allen keys if you have them. Most tremolo setups are done within the week.

Common questions
- How much is a Floyd Rose setup in NYC?
- An advanced setup for Floyd Rose and other floating or locking tremolos is $200 labor at Brothers Guitar Shop on the Upper East Side.
- Why won't my Floyd Rose stay in tune?
- Usually one of four things: the bridge isn't level with the body, the nut isn't locked or is binding, the knife edges are worn, or the string change wasn't balanced. A setup fixes the first two and the last; worn knife edges need a new bridge or post, which we'll show you.
- Can you block my tremolo so it doesn't move?
- Yes. Blocking or installing a stabilizer runs $90 to $160 depending on the hardware.
- Can I change string gauge on a Floyd Rose?
- Yes, but it needs a full advanced setup rather than a restring, because spring tension and the nut slots have to be reset for the new strings.
- Do you set up Bigsbys?
- Yes, Bigsby-equipped guitars fall under the advanced setup at $200.
