Guitar Restringing on the Upper East Side
Strings go dead, people are busy, and a shop that does it right is worth the walk. A restring at Brothers is a fresh set properly wound and stretched, the fretboard wiped down, the hardware tightened, and a quick look over the guitar for anything that's about to become a problem.
Standard restring
$65 for any 6-string electric, steel-string or nylon acoustic, or 4 and 5-string bass. We stretch the strings in so they stay in tune, check the tuners, clean the board and wipe the body. If we spot high action, buzzing or a lifting bridge we tell you, no pressure.
12-strings and locking systems
$115 for 12-strings, Floyd Rose and other floating or locking tremolos, since the bridge has to be rebalanced every time. If you're changing gauge on a Floyd, it's an advanced setup ($200) rather than a restring.
Strings
Bring your own set or pick one from the wall. We stock D'Addario, Ernie Ball, Elixir, Martin, DR and most gauges from 8s to bass sets. Strings are not included in the restring price.
Make it a cleaning
A basic cleaning is $60 and a full detail is $135 for a deep clean and polish of body, neck, fretboard and hardware. Acoustic maintenance ($95) is restring, lemon oil, light fret buff and a quick truss adjustment in one.

Common questions
- How much does a guitar restring cost in NYC?
- $65 at Brothers Guitar Shop for electric, acoustic or bass, plus the strings. 12-strings and Floyd Rose guitars are $115.
- Can I wait while you restring my guitar?
- Often, yes. Call 646-559-8771 first so we can plan around the tech's bench. Otherwise it's same day or next day.
- Do you sell strings?
- Yes. D'Addario, Ernie Ball, Elixir, Martin, DR and more in the shop at 316 East 84th Street.
- How often should I change strings?
- Gigging or daily players every few weeks, everyone else when they sound dull or feel rough, usually every 2 to 3 months. Coated strings last longer.
- Is a restring the same as a setup?
- No. A restring is new strings, stretch, clean and check. A setup adjusts the truss rod, action, intonation and nut. If the guitar plays badly with fresh strings, it needs a setup.
